Some of the drawings below are my favorites of 2020 – this week’s theme seeming to be extreme stretching and facial distortions. As I was exploring distortions more, I started to see how far I could push it. Over time, I started to pull it back some more, but I really enjoyed doing these drawings.
Balloon boy! I think this was inspired by a friend of mine that I had met in Hawaii. She was going to be working on a children’s book and was looking for someone to draw some of the illustrations for her. I drew something that… didn’t work out that well (not pictured here). As a result, I had hot air balloons in my head and decided to make them a little bizarre!
A little color. I think I would like to try redoing this one some day. It has potential, but it wasn’t executed too well back in March.
For whatever reason, this person reminds me of my ex boyfriend haha. I think it’s the hair and the glasses (though he wasn’t a redhead).
One thing I wasn’t very good about back then was figuring out what exactly I’m trying to draw. I knew I wanted her spine to be exposed, and that I didn’t want to draw her from head to toe, but instead I put some strange robotic rain boots on her and called it a day. It feels unfinished and lazy.
Grimes! Keep in mind, this point of time is at the very beginning of quarantine going on. Grimes basically saved me in the early days of covid. I would listen to her while going on solo, masked walks. I would turn the lights off in my apartment and dance to her music in the dark at night. I love her!
This is one of my favorite drawings of this year. I love this guy! His facial distortion worked out just perfectly for me. I felt that my understanding of the model’s anatomy worked well in my favor, too, for this piece.
I didn’t totally mess it up with color! Yahoo!
A combination of distortions and amputations! I like this one, too.
Can you tell I like to use greens and pinks? Even if I’m not drawing flowers or leaves, I love to use a similar color palette as if I am.
This is another piece I’m so proud of! I wish her strange feet looked a little better, but in general, I love it. I think her fingers look good, her body looks decently proportioned, and it’s mysterious.
I think the shadows of the hoop skirt cast on her legs worked well, too! I probably could have mapped out where exactly the shadows should go a little bit better, but that’s okay.
Once again – I love the idea of this, but the execution is lacking. While I think it looks so cool with part of their face super stretched out, it just doesn’t feel like it’s rooted in reality or something. Same with the robot legs. It was just a random idea that I had that didn’t end up looking that great.
I still really love the piece, though!
I hope you enjoyed looking through these pieces! As always, feel free to write me on here or DM me on instagram if you’re interested in any pieces or want to chat about anything.
