Hello, hello! For this week’s share, we’ll be looking at some overlaps and amputees. We have a lot of intersecting people, coupled off, as well as the continued theme of bodily distortions and amputations.
I had been very interested in drawing intersections between people and using different colors in the spots where they overlap as if they are colors mixed on a color wheel. “Nuclear Family” and “The Twist” are my favorite examples of that, though you can probably see I was experimenting with different ways to coordinate it. With “Play Ball,” for instance, the two people aren’t actually overlapping, but I wanted to try coloring their limbs differently.
It’s strange to think that by the start of “Don’t Look Back,” I have started to revert my style back to before the playing cards – a more natural style, not with the “overexposure” look I was talking about in previous posts. There are often a lot of turning points in my work, or forks in the road, and I try to explore them to the best of my ability. Sometimes I think a theme is working out so well and I want to keep working on it forever because I know it’s easy to churn out something I’m happy with… but if I do that for too long, the work gets boring for me. I like to switch it up. Stay tuned to see how I switch it up, next!
As always, contact me with any interest in these pieces. Be sure to check me out on instagram as well!
